Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT), as the unit in charge to manage Suvarnabhumi Airport , realizes its vital role in management and quality control of the environment affected by airport construction. Thus, AOT has laid down a policy for environmental management that complies with national rules and regulations. These measures dictate quality control and promotion of the importance of the environment, as well as inspection of the quality control system so that the environment is not affected negatively. Otherwise, AOT is also committed to raising awareness about the environment among staff at all levels, and most importantly, in encouraging nearby communities to collaborate with AOT in maintaining the airport's natural surroundings.

Aware of impending ecological effects when the airport is opened, AOT established the housing survey project to inspect neighboring residences and buildings. In 2004 it conceived an operational plan for public relations – addressing all residents living in the Suvarnabhumi Airport community; later it conducted an environmental impact assessment study, approved by the Environment Institute in 2005, to identify subsequent environmental effects generated by airport activities. (As the number of passengers will increase from 30 million to 45 million in the year the airport commences operations.)

In 2006, AOT has started working on the public relations plan for the Suvarnabhumi Airport community. The main objectives are:

  1. Disseminating information to the local inhabitants,
  2. Information exchange and
  3. Problem solving for the mutual benefit of all concerned.

This project is based on the concept of “Live well and be happy with our airport” and has been created to enhance acquaintance, friendship, and more involvement among community members. Most importantly, it provides community members with a sense of belonging which will lead to perpetual bond with Suvarnabhumi Airport . To accomplish these tasks, four main working groups are responsible for 19 activities, listed hereunder:

  • Conduct a survey among the residents who are expected to be affected environmentally in order to note their opinions.
  • Set up a sub-group of residents who are likely to be relocated and conduct meetings with them.
  • Set up a sub-group of residents who are likely to be affected by noise pollution and conduct meetings with them.
  • Set up sub-group of community leaders and conduct meetings with them.
  • Promote community activities.
  • Set up community centers around the airport in order to promote linkage with all communities.
  • Conduct community center visits around the airport.
  • Engage students graduating from educational institutes near the airport to work at the airport as trainees.
  • Make progress reports on the Internet, and exchange opinions through the web site developed for this project.

  • Conduct academic seminars.
  • Conduct a field trip for those who are affected by noise pollution, community leaders, and government officials working in the area.
  • Organize a field trip for educational institutes likely to be affected by noise pollution.
  • Organize exhibitions on tour.
  • Organize a project on “The new generation who takes pride in greatness and care for the environment”.
  • Organize a campaign on “Growing plants to lessen noise pollution and build up pleasant atmosphere”.

  • Produce a quarterly newsletter.
  • Develop a V.C.D. that introduces the operational plan to protect the environment and solve related problems.
  • Produce a handbook entitled “To Live Happily with the Airport”.

  • Convene with the media.

AOT is fully aware of the significance of nearby communities as components of “ the constructive force ” in facilitating the operation of Suvarnabhumi Airport and producing habitable neighboring communities. Therefore AOT would like to kindly invite all of you to participate in the project by expressing your opinions or lending suggestions, participating in our activities, or regularly following up on updates. This project, in turn, will create a more livable society in the area surrounding Suvarnabhumi Airport .
